Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, known as Ab-Soul, grew up in Carson, California. Overcoming childhood Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which caused light sensitivity and his trademark dark sunglasses, Stevens initially took up rapping as a hobby before forming the group Area 51. In 2007, he signed to independent label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), co-founding the influential West Coast hip hop collective Black Hippy alongside Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and ScHoolboy Q. Known as the cerebral lyricist of the group, Ab-Soul gained critical attention with independent albums like 'Control System' (2012) and 'These Days...' (2014), the latter reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200. He remains a core figure in TDE's independent legacy.
